Best UK Slingshot and Catapult Shops: How to Choose
Searching for the best UK catapult shop mostly returns generic marketplaces and drop-shippers. Here is a practical checklist for telling a real maker from a reseller, and where TJ Catapults fits.

If you search for a UK slingshot or catapult shop you will find three kinds of seller: marketplace listings with stock photos, resellers who import and re-badge, and genuine makers who build what they sell. The product can look similar in a thumbnail. It is not the same in the hand. The checklist below is how to tell them apart, whoever you end up buying from.
A seven-point checklist for any UK catapult shop
- Real photographs of the actual item. Handmade pieces vary, so the photo should be of the one you receive. Identical studio renders usually mean a mass-produced import.
- Clear materials. A good seller names the handle material (hardwood, antler, bone, recycled metal) and the band type, rather than saying "premium" and leaving it there.
- Who makes it. Look for a named maker, a story, and evidence of a workshop rather than a warehouse.
- UK dispatch and a real returns policy. Fast domestic shipping and a stated return window matter more than a flashy homepage.
- Honest pricing. Beware very low prices on "leather and oak" style items, and equally beware huge markups with no explanation.
- Spare bands and ammo available. A shop that sells consumables expects you to actually shoot, and cares about the hobby.
- Reachable humans. A working contact page that answers questions before you buy.

Maker, reseller or marketplace?
| Maker (e.g. TJ Catapults) | Reseller / importer | Marketplace listing | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who builds it | The seller, by hand, in the UK | A factory abroad | Varies, often unclear |
| Photos | Of the actual item | Usually stock images | Mixed |
| Variation | Each piece is unique | Identical units | Unpredictable |
| Advice | From someone who shoots | Limited | Rarely |
| Customisation | Often possible | No | No |
| Typical risk | Limited stock, items sell out | Quality varies batch to batch | Unverified claims |
Where TJ Catapults fits
We are a small UK maker. Every catapult in the shop is shaped, finished and tested by hand, listed with its own photographs, and dispatched from the UK. We would rather say plainly what we are than rank ourselves against others: if you value handmade, individual pieces and speaking to the person who made yours, we are built for that. If you want the cheapest possible mass-produced frame, a marketplace import is a different product and that is fine.
Our range leans on unusual handle materials, including antler, camel bone and recycled Stihl parts, because that is where handmade work stands apart from anything a factory produces.

What to ask any seller before you buy
- What is the handle made from, and is it solid or laminated?
- Are the bands flat or tube, and what draw weight are they suited to? See flat vs tube bands.
- Is this the exact item in the photo?
- How long until dispatch, and what is the return window?
- Which catapult is best for my use? A good maker will ask what you shoot before recommending. Our target shooting guide is a good starting point.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to buy a catapult in the UK?
Buy from a maker or specialist who can show you the actual item, explains what it is made from, dispatches from the UK and offers returns. TJ Catapults makes every catapult it sells by hand in the UK and photographs each one exactly as it ships.
Are slingshots and catapults the same thing?
Yes. In the UK the word catapult is the everyday term for what is called a slingshot in the US. Both are a forked frame with elastic bands and a pouch. The terms are interchangeable for shopping and searching.
Is it legal to buy a catapult in the UK?
Catapults can be bought and owned in the UK by adults, and are sold as sporting and hobby items. It is your responsibility to use them safely, on private land with permission and against a proper backstop, and never at people or animals. Check current local rules if unsure.
How much should a good handmade catapult cost?
Genuinely handmade catapults in the UK typically sit in a modest price band for the hobby. At TJ Catapults handmade catapults start from about £45, with premium pieces and sets priced higher.
